Dug in a bit:

I am a bit concerned as it looks like they did everything "right".  Especially getting to 3 stores.  I think it may have to do with too many high end comps and too much overhead.

Thoughts?

It looks like they understood what they where doing, but there's no way to know without talking to them if it was managed correctly.  They might have overspent on marketing, or never made a significant enough profit. It's possible one or more investors bailed when the housing bubble collapsed. Any number of factors.

December 3, 2004 to August 2008 when the other store closed. That's only 4 years from what I've read over 50% of the small businesses started fail in less than 5 years. Another 20% fail before 10 years. That's not just LAN centers that's all small businesses. Could be any number of reasons.

We had a sandwich shop in a small town where I used to live. Guy had the best lunch around place was packed EVERY DAY if you didn't order early you had to wait forever on your food, but it was worth it. So one day the place closes and everyone is scratching their heads. Turns out the guy didn't pay the business's taxes and they closed him down fairly quickly.

Not paying taxes will do it for sure.  We also had a small chain of successful restaurants in the Tampa area that was expanding at a rapid pace...sometimes buying out others to re-brand.  Then a group of them closed at once....which turned out to be tied to the owner's drug addiction.  Apparently he was using several of the stores to finance his habit like a private piggy bank.

The other franchises owned/operated by other family members are still open.

I would venture to say that most businesses don't fail due to lack of expertise in the service industry (PC repair, Lan Center, Restaurant, Auto Shop, etc) or even customer demand...most likely fail because of insufficient planning, funding, or mismanagement of the resources and liabilities.
