Why not just have an outdoor patio/area for them to smoke in ( B&B has this, part of the sidewalk just has these temp fences with some cafe tables by their 2nd door - closed off area I guess, for the smokers ). Most people will log out of say the smart launcher for this, and for those who did consoles... well... I guess as much of a dick thing it is to say, you just made money off of someone who isn't using your product even for the brief 5 minute period.

True, but I just figured if you required a day pass for 5-8 hour period for the Smoker Period why would it hurt to give them brakes.

Everyone smokes outside. We have a bucket of kitty litter around the corner of the building for butts.

I've got people that buy day passes...sometimes they ask to leave for a bit and I don't have a problem with it for now.

Lots of people go grab food and if there aren't enough people here to justify ordering pizza or something else. Then I don't see any harm in letting them go. Plus they always come back. They have to understand though if they leave and the place gets busy There's nothing I can do for them. I'm also not going to be responsible for anything left here while they are gone unless they put it behind the counter. We let their hours save from one visit to the next so I think it's fair that they can leave and come back on a day pass at their own risk.

I can only see it being a problem if they leave something and don't come back or if the place is packed and they come back with no open stations. Even then it isn't really a problem for me only for them. Some of these guys come in as we're unlocking the doors when we open and stay till we close. They spend more money here than any other customers so if they want to come and go I have not had a problem with it yet.

Hourly customers timers run from the time they start playing doesn't matter what else they do yet another reason to just pony up and get the day pass. I push it as much as I can no only is it easier for me to keep up with it's better for them too.

Day pass would not pose a problem I agree. Hourly I do think it would for smokers. I sure as sooner jump off a bridge then constantly pause hourly times for a smoker. Some may be fine, but others who want or need one ever ten minutes would get old fast. Not to mention we are trying to run a business and do not want to spend all the time pausing and unpausing client times. Lot more important things could be done. Like RsteeleAUG said cannot guarantee spots back if gets busy but if slow yes.

If I was to have a ''Smokers Night'' I would have a tournament for them or special small competitions in house for them so while some compete others can ''take a break.''   : )

So, I just realized I have the most important, yet elementary question to ask.

... where do I even begin?  ???

Our suggestion is to start by visiting other center owners and maybe if it is close enough, work for them. We learned everything by going to meetings, co-business planning and working directly with/for game center owners in Michigan. We eventually even invested our hardware and technical assistance; along with our software partners, into a local game center.

Also just signed up for the Civilization 5 showcase on igames. So hopefully we'll be taking part in that towards the end of September.

I have only been in a game center once. It was in another state and I was surprised at how busy it was, but how poorly set up it was. Two collage ITT Tech guys started two up. One North of Indianapolis and one south, which was in Greenwood, IN. I went to the one in Greenwood. They used mostly old tube tvs for the consoles. I do not remember any newer consoles than ps2 and xbox. They had one wii, which was in a separate room. It solely played mario cart the old guy that worked there told me. There were a few pcs maybe 10, but the rest was tube tvs and consoles all over the place... in no uniform order. wires and cables were everywhere. So many were connected to orange extension cords, which draped the floors every which way. So easy for an accident.

I was not impressed with the setup at all. I saw great potential in the idea and dreamed of a well organized one some day. Several years later I found SALC. I have found everything I needed to learn on here through SALC and GCD before I finally made a decision that this is what I wanted to do. Since then I have written up a business plan and presented it to SCORE, which is good for small business start ups and for struggling small businesses. The one in my city said I was the third best prepared prospect business owner they have ever come into their building. They have high hopes for me in this business endeavor. ALl I need is the financial backing and I will be getting started on it.

Figure your system count... pc and console. Figure the sq. ft. you wish to start with with the amount of systems you have picked. Get a quote with help doing the stuff that you cannot do and for purchasing the stuff in bulk. Finally work up a business plan to present to SCORE in your area and they can assist you on the business aspect and how to present the business plan to a bank and personal investors. i am still getting quotes for other things that are more minor, but overall tweaking the business plan here and there is better than going into a bank and asking for a loan and not even having a professional looking business plan typed up. I presented it in a simple manella folder and SCORE loved how I did it. They let me keep it, but they said to be sure to leave it with all the banks and investors that you present it to. If you need to know the step by step process that I did to get the business plan then I can email it to you. Send me a personal message and I can send you the key headlines for what you want to have put in your business plan.

Well also - did you guys have to invest your own personal finances ( i.e. a deposit on the business loan ), investors, etc?

I tried to get some help from my boss without really flat out telling him what I Was up to. Didn't work. He went more on about how he started and why he started in Orlando vs Daytona etc -_-

Trust me I am sure everyone has had to invest somethig into starting their business. Nobody can get a business going without investing some sort of money into it personally. I am about ready to start up a printing service business and even though the startup cost are low even when I borrowed money I had/have to still invest more money into it that the loan did not cover.

Well, bank loanwise for a biz loan  you'd pay anywhere between 20 & 30% a banker informed me recently.

I read that once. It was quite interesting. Especially, since it was started by a guy in my home state and where I still currently reside. : )

Well, discussing with my friend, we figured it wasn't the greatest idea due to various limitations.

Then I spoke to the current manager. Yeah, the reason why the school bought it was because they weren't pulling in enough cash flow. Broke college students, which makes sense. We did mull about the idea that students who travel to schools ( i.e. community colleges etc ) are better off financially than those who go balls to the wall up in classes and live in the dorms at a 4 year university.
