Over the course of running SALC for almost 4 years, I’ve had several potential Owners come to me talking about sweeps gaming machines. In short gambling oriented Internet Cafes. I’ve always gently redirected them somewhere else because that’s not what we do here. We are Video Gaming Cafes with no true gambling. In the south of your united states the Gambling Internet Cafes have become very largely popular in states such as Florida, Georgia, Alabama and few other southern states. Arkansas, where I reside, also have had a surge of such establishments here. The bad of it is that they are Masquerading as LAN Centers or Video Game Stores or just pure Coffee establishments to get their business licenses.
This is causing issues for those in our business. I don’t have a problem with either business model, but when it causes issues for me or my fan base then we’ve got to do something as a community to educate the masses about what we do in our establishments and how it differentiates from other business types that are associated with gaming. When I’ve gotten business license my first time I had to go in front of the chamber of commerce to clarify what my business actually was, mainly because they were afraid I was setting up a gambling establishment. After I clarified what I was doing there was no issues and I got my license.
Well now there are states that are looking to ban Internet Cafes (One of the mainly names a LAN Center flies under). We as community need to move and make sure we don’t get lumped into this legislation. The most recent state that is moving to ban internet cafes is Florida. Here is an article with more information. As a community what can we do to make sure establishments such as these don’t make our business model illegal by association?
